I don't really know what I think.  I think JJ Abrams is basically an adequate director.  He does everything "pretty good", but nothing really that great.  And his films all feel rushed for time somehow.  Well, except for Super 8, which is by far my favorite of of his films.  I also don't think he's a particularly good action director.

I dunno, he's certainly a better choice than Lucas, and they've got a great script guy.  We'll see.

Say what you want about Abrams, but he helmed the first ST movie to win an Academy Award (Best Make Up), and his project was a success at the Box Office (perhaps the only criterion the studios care about when making such choices).  It's entirely possible the meetings go something like, "Well, he won't screw it up too badly in most people's eyes and he'll probably make us a ton of money."

Professor Hathaway:  I noticed you stopped stuttering.
Bodie:      I've been giving myself shock treatments.
Professor Hathaway: Up the voltage.

I liked his Star Trek movie, but I hadn't seen much Star Trek before it came out.

I don't like the shaky camera work, and he used that in Star Trek.  If he uses it in Star Wars, I don't know, it just wouldn't feel right.
