The director of THE DEER HUNTER and the infamous HEAVEN'S GATE has passed away at the age of 77.

We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.

I love "Heaven's Gate" since I catched a TV passing of the uncut version. It was a time when I was fed up with run-of-the-mill films and watching such beautifully shot scenes and that disregard for narrative clarity felt incredibly powerful and refreshing. I have never watched it again for fear of tainting those memories, but I plan to do it at any time.

I also feel I should mention his later films also have its moments, even if he had to work under close surveillance from the producers. I have a soft spot for "Year of the dragon", a neo-noir starring Mickey Rourke when he still looked normal, and for "Sunchaser", a neo-western that was never given the proper chance by movie distributors.

With all his faults, Cimino's cinema was one of a kind, and his vision will be missed.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

Allhallowsday

I have looked at THE DEER HUNTER many times, including recently.  Whatever that film is, it is unique.  I also liked HEAVEN'S GATE... probably for the same reasons cited above.  I am quite fond of "motionless" films that may be spellbinding.
Good night Michael
