A very weird Japanese horror-scifi movie  from the groovy 60's, Goke body snatcher from hell can't really be called a bad movie. Nor can it unreservedly be called a good movie.

Basically a plane with a mixed crew including one obligatory blonde american woman crashes in a remote area  following an encounter with a fairly  well done UFO. The saucer effects here are better than a lot of Japanese scifi monster movies,  I'll give it that. They even hold up  decently today.

The occupants of the plane area mixed bag,  one a terrorist with a hidden bomb, a women who lost her husband in Viet nam,  a corrupt arrogant  businessman,  his abused lackey, some fairly decent people and of course the titular monster shows up later.

This is a dark and depressing movie. The director apparently attended the akira kurasowa school of film making. There are mixed and unclear messages, somehow it's  implied thast humanities own violence and corruption is responsible for the aliens coming  to earth with absolutely no good in mind, yet  one wonders how humans would have been able to defend themselves against the vastly superior alien technology even if they had been all good and peaceful,  so maybe it wansct our fault.

The aliens make a show of judging humanity yet seem sadistic, cruel, aggressive and arogwnt themselves so screw them.

Expect a very depressing ending worthy of kurasowa himself.

All in all I can absuletelky definitely certainly say that the denizens of this fine site might like it.  I will say unambigously that if you're a regular here amd haven't seen it you should peep it.

Just remember it is a major  downer so if you're  already depressed pass on it until you're  feeling better.

I think it's one of the best Japanese horror films ever made. And I'm not joking.

Nice to see some folks agree with my view here.

My perverse nature thinks this would make a great double feature with "the green slime".  :teddyr:

the good bits are fantastic, engaging.

The bad bits are terrible but they are part of the film.  yeah, its inconsistent, but overall worth watching.

I went into this thing thinking- "Another goofy monster movie from Japan."  Boy, was I wrong.
The ending was almost surreal- and very disturbing. Very nihilistic.

2 minutes and 25 seconds in we get our first bloody bird crash :

Once you've seen the first one, you can't wait for the second!  Bloody bird crashes are so horrible!  Particularly with squishy sound effects!

Yeah, very nihilistic. But not a bad bad movie in any way.

One thing about this movie was it avoided the expected development. I expected the humans to use the bomb on the plane to blow up the UFO and kill the aliens. So when that plotline went up in smoke I was surprised.
