I just saw someone else reference OLIVER TWIST... 

DAVID LEAN's  OLIVER TWIST (1948) is an overlooked gem.  It is not often talked about.

Looks like I gotta watch OLIVER TWIST it may be a chore...I really don't like musicals unless it's Busby Berkley or WIZARD OF OZ...or I may like it! I don't know yet!

NO!  Not OLIVER! the musical (1968).  OLIVER TWIST (1948) a British interpretation of DICKENS' novel.  It's not musical.  And it has ROBERT NEWTON as the villain Bill Sikes!!!  It's black and white.  It's GREAT.

His version of Great Expectations, from 1946, was brilliant as well. That's my favorite Dickens novel by far.

I have 3 versions on DVD: the musical, the David Lean version and the Roman Polanski version. All are excellent.

I have not seen the POLANSKI film.

I love this movie. The first time I saw it, I felt like I was back at the drive-in around 1974.

I found that film derivative and manipulative; but it does have SID HAIG!   Absolutely one of his best performances!

Okay, a couple of lesser known movies which I enjoyed:

The Glitterball (1977) - British children's film about an alien ball which comes to Earth. Apparently is was 'lost' for some years until rediscovered in the 2000s. It screened on Australian TV in the early 80s and I loved it.

The Omega Connection aka The London Connection (1979) is a Disney production that rode on the popularity of James Bond, creating a kind of Bond-lite for kids. Notably, Omega Connection was directed by Robert Clouse, who directed Enter The Dragon (1973) and the wacky looking Golden Needles (1974). This movie played on the Wonderful World Of Disney in Australia in the late 70s and early 80s. Still trying to find a decent copy of it. In English!
