I remember a lot of those: the apartheid government didn't want television in South Africa for many years until they realized it could be a well oiled and well funded propaganda machine for them.

When that came up in my YouTube feed I saw a video that said South African TV signs on in 1976. South Africa didn't have TV until then? Surely not, right?

Sadly true.

The apartheid government banned TV for many years saying it was "the Devil's box" and only permitted it once they realized that they could use it as a propaganda device which they did very effectively.
