Last movie I saw is... doh! Young Guns 2.

I know, I know, first things first, right now I am schedulling some movies so I can stop saying that that piece of crap is the last movie I have seen. Now let's go to the hatchett job...

Alright, I picked that on TV because I have always felt curiosity towards western mythical characters, and of course the presence of Billy the Kid was enough to make me watch this. I have to say... in my defense? that I almost enjoyed the first "Young Guns". The script was crappy, but directing was OK and it had Terence Stamp as Tunstall and Jack palance as the villainous Murphy.

Wish we were that lucky here. Looks like most of the money went to hire half of the brat pack (again), and to Jon Bon Jovi (argghhhh...), who made an "inspired by..." album. The script is plain awful, with abrupt cuts between scenes, and what's worse, the scenes we are shown are no interesting at all. Looks like we are watching random scenes from these people's lives, and character development is almost absent (I know, I know it is a sequel, but to make Garrett change from loyal friend to Billy's opponent start in two minutes is pathetic, and his reasons for doing that are just stupid. Even worse, they are no exploited), and the action... well, it would be OK if it made some sense. But no.

Acting is... well, unforgettable. Emilio Estevez is awful (again) as Billy, and looks that he thought: "Well, if they have hired me again, it is probably because they liked my hystrionics in the first movie, and also that unbearable laughter I invented. So, this time I'll do it again, and again, and again." At his side, even such mediocre actors like Lou Diamond Philips or  Kiefer Sutherland look like good.

About the rest... I have to admit cinematography was pretty good, and so was Alan Silvestri's score, if it wasn't so repetitive. I really wonder how much minutes of music he wrote, because it sounds just like a lonh track (10 minutes or so) used again and again. About the director, is Geoff Murphy, the one who made "Freejack" and that later made "Under Siege II" and "Fortress II". Believe it or not, he has learned something in the process, which means his job here is even worse than in those movies. Just imagine.

Well, I've always like YOUNG GUNS II, but I'm not going to try to defend it.

The YOUNG GUNS movies were pretty much an excuse to get the hot young actors of the time into a western movie.  Westerns were pretty popular at the time, after having lay dormant for quite some time.  In fact, if you look at the cast of YOUNG GUNS II, it's like a line-up of wasted potential.  Estevez and Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Christian Slater. . . I think the only standouts in the film were James Coburn, who gets by on his voice alone and certainly didn't need this movie, and Viggo Mortensen, who works steadily and always bring a good amount of workmanship to his roles.

But I still enjoy YOUNG GUNS II.  At least it had the good taste to get Jenny Wright naked.

Viggo Mortenson was in Young Guns? I was reading an article about LOTR and I was surprised to learn he's in his mid-forties. About time he got some recognition, and what better way to get it than by playing Strider?
