I saw the original Mimic in the theaters and thought it was a half decent Aliens type movie with some cool ass bugs.  I watched it again on Sci-Fi last night and I'll be the first to admit I really like this movie.  Those damn cockroaches scared the crap out of me, especially when the stand upright and look human!!!
Does anyone know if there are plans for a more feature filled DVD, as opposed to the plain one out right now?  And has anyone seen Mimic 2?  Is it worth the rental price?
thanks!!!

Cullen

I haven't seen Mimic 2 myself, but my whiny baby brother says it isn't worth the rental, and most of the reviews I've read agree.  I'd wait till it was on cable - if you like it there, you can always rent it afterwards.

This is as good a place as any to mention that Mimic is going to get two more sequels.  The odds that they'll be any good are low, but here's hoping.

The second film is definitely less impressive than the first.  Lesser in the acting, effects, and plot department.  The plot has a mimic pretty much stalking a female bug expert, because he wants to have wild roach love with her body.

Haven't heard about a new and improved "Mimic" DVD.

I've pretty much been following Guillermo Del Toro's work since I saw BLADE II, which I was mightily impressed with.

Unfortunately, while I can admire MIMIC from a distance, I can never get myself involved with the actual movie itself.  Nothing about it really excites my interest.  Also, it uses one of my least favorite plot devices, the autistic child.

Still it is a skilled entry into the horror genre, and it has Mira Sorvino in it.

I recommend THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, which is an interesting ghost story set in the Spanish civil war.  And Del Toro's involvement with HELLBOY is the only thing that gives me hope for that movie.
Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.

I liked the movie, but that part annoyed me. If you notice, once the heroes find out that they're giant bugs, they completely abandon the idea of them passing for human and just show them as bugs. Why is it that they act completely human (stand upright, walk, open windows etc) up until everyone finds out that they're bugs and from that point on, you never see them passing for human?

I suppose it's an extension of the horror movie rule that the heroes are never in any danger until they learn that they're in danger. They can walk around in the dark, wander through the woods and nothing happens to them, but the minute they find the first dead body, the killer/creature is one step behind them for the rest of the movie.

Ufff... I hate bugs and saw the first movie in a big theatre with a big screen. Bad, bad idea. Very good movie, mainly because of Del Toro's direction. I still really like it, but I am a bit dissapointed with the second half of the film: as things get more and more dangerous for the characters, the movie becomes more and more conventional, and, paradoxically, less scary. Haven't seen the sequel, but heard it is pretty bad, and I am not surprised. Part one was good mainly because of Del Toro's talent.
