i received "octaman"! in the mail today and it got me thinking about my favorite video boxes (the octaman box is something to behold---drawing on cover/no pictures on back).

i've got the video with the zombie with the light up eyes on the cover...i forget the name of it (it's packed away)...anyone?

"uncle sam" has a motion cover that's pretty cool. the movie is of course ridiculous...

i'm thinking more videos than dvds just for the reason that special packaging is pretty common for dvds. but if there's something really different, i'd like to hear about it.

The blinking eye zombie movie is "The Dead Pit."  Not all that bad, it is weird at times.  Not so weird as "Burial Ground" mind you.

I have always loved the original cover for "Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension."  Just a white cover with various images inspired by the film.

"Lifeforce" has a neat cover and, of all things, the artwork for "Mutant." (the toxic vampire movie) is pretty darn cool.

Frankenhooker's talking box was neat.........

And Color Me Blood Red sells itself with its cover....

liked the roaring King Kong box, but then I'm a sad, sad, little man.

The "Wanna date?" Frankenhooker held some sort of fascination for me.  For some reason, every time I passed it on the self at the video store, I would press its button and listen to that awful voice.  Sometimes I would say "Yes," but I'm not sure she meant the same thing as "date" as I did.

Anyway, I never rented the movie, and in time she stopped talking to me. I'm not sure that there was a connection there or not.

The roaring King Kong box also stopped roaring, but that's another barrel of bananas.

Have I mentioned that I'm a very sad man?

Partial silliness aside - I don't have a favorite cover (except maybe the Q box - that's pretty cool.) However, I do have two rules of thumb dealing with them.

1.) Never rent/buy movies with special covers - They are rarely worth the money. Exceptions to this rule would be the aforementioned roaring Kong and, apparently Dead Pit. The flashing eyes just put me right off. From what I've heard, I've missed out, but I'll stand by this rule.

2.) Never rent/buy movies if the back of the box reveals the entire plot of the film - It just seems too desperate to me.

Now, this not to say that I'll refuse to watch a movie that fit these rules. I'm not that much of an elitist, or a prude, or a fool (these things get released, after all.) I have no other standards to go by; I own Dracula v. Frankenstein (both of them) for God's sake. I need something to stop me from buying every bad horror/sci-fi/fantasy movie in sight.

Right?

I'll have to say holographic box covers are actually kind of fun, "Jack Frost", "Uncle Sam", and "SoulKeeper" are vastly fun ones.

Forgot "Shadowbuilder", "Jack Frost 2", and "Creepy Crawlers"
