Metal Kaiju Mayhem?

For those of us on the look-out for Kaiju, a bit of new word and images are out on the new Godzilla X Mechagodzilla. (here after just GXMG).  Not a lot, really, but if your curious, you can go here and here (Edit: 9/19/02 - It has been pointed out that there may be SPOILERS here.  Be advised.)

Now, I’m a Godzilla fan.  I like Godzilla 200 , and am looking forward to seeing the other two “new” Godzillas.

But this one…

Am I the only one left cold by Mechagodzilla?

I liked his first two appearances, but I don’t see the fascination.  Why not make something new?  Or pull out Gigan (or Rodan!)?  Why go back to the metal behemoth?

The poster makes the movie look like it might be something.  And I will admit to being psyched at first to see it.  But as GXMG draws nearer…I’m really not hearing anything to set it apart.

Time’ll tell.  It always does.

Is it me, or have Godzilla’s enemies grown substantially weaker as time runs on?  Ghidora, for instance.  First it took three Kaiju to beat him.  Then two.  Then he needs back up (Gigan).

Just a thought.

Careful of spoilers in the new GXMG article...

I too am not tripping over this new MechaGodzilla: it's reportedly a remote-control machine, which makes it basically a Super-X2 with a face. (Unless a certain unusued aspect of the original script for the '90s "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla" gets reborn here; in the middle of the climax, its backup programming turns MG from the movie's "hero" into its "villain" when it goes after the harmless Baby of its own accord. Will the new MG go nutzoid?) There are too many design elements of earlier versions (and Mecha-King Ghidorah) being recycled, to boot--plus those stupid cables hanging off everything. I hope they aren't important--they look easy to tear out.

There's always the chance that GXMG will kick ass, but while GXM ("Godzilla X Megaguirus") was okay--with moments of brilliance--its staff, returning for GXMG, will have a hard time topping GMK.

THAT'S what Godzilla v MechaGodzilla needed.  They were already going the "let's-not-harm-the-radioactive-beast" route; they should have kept going the extra mile.

That, and they shouldn't have killed Radon.

Photos continue to pile up at Monster Zero. Now the new MechaGodzilla's transport system is on display; rather than blasting off under the power of its own rockets, MG is airlifted by a pair of aircraft resembling superarmored Harriers, recalling the manner in which Battra and Mothra picked up Godzilla in "Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth."

I suppose it makes more sense, but it isn't quite as cool...

Including "Desughidora" (Death Ghidora) as mentioned in Andrew's "Rebirth of Mothra," Mecha-King Ghidorah, and his prehistoric version from "Rebirth of Mothra 3," King Ghidorah has now appeared in six versions across four movies in the past decade or so. Mothra has--larva not included--had nine incarnations (including Fairy, Aqua, Armored, Rainbow, Eternal, and Lightspeed versions) across six movies, and MechaGodzilla, as of the latest movie, will have appeared twice in less than a decade. C'mon, Toho...you have a whole stable of critters! Even if new, original designs prove increasingly difficult (given the inherent limitations of "suitmation"), a lot of oldies haven't had a new shot in decades. Give these guys a break, and give K-Ghiddy and Mothra and Mecha-G a rest.

Fairy, Aqua, Armored...

It all sounds like a bad toy line up, doesn't it?  When do we get the Mothra with the Kung-fu Grip?

The next movie (assuming, of course, that there is a next movie) almost has to have a new monster.  My luck, it'll be Megalon.  Or that shocking thing in Godzilla's Revenge

For the curious, the scene of the Mecha Godzilla air lift can be seen here .  While I agree it isn't as cool, it does suggest a greater sense of realism. Of course, the Maser Cannons promptly destroy that thought.  Oh well.

Godzilla's Revenge had Gabarah, he was the electricity using bipedal kitty. I personally am annoyed that I can't these in america, I am not a rich man and I don't trust the internet for anything dealing with money. OH well, I have been a Godzilla fan for a very long time but I want to see Gigan get back in the mix if nothing else.

MechaG looked promising at first. Now, sound like ...well...we will indeed see.........
I like the new look, but the story defines how we'll take to the 'bot.
Radon could come back...they could always find another egg!
Finaly, lets let the kaiju stable have some screen time. Its over due.

"Aggressivlly eccentric, and proud of it!"

I could do with another appearance of Radon/Rodan.  I wouldn't sneeze at an appearance of Spiega, either.

(I know that's not the Giant Spider's real name, any more than Rodan is Radon's real name.  I tend to stick with the names I know.0
