Pet Peeve

I was off site, looking at reviews on the IMDb [/i] when I stumbled over a review that irritated me a touch.

I'm not going to give the reviewer's name, nor the film he/she/it reviewed.*  Yelling and screaming over this person's OVERWHELMING IGNORANCE AND BAD TASTE won't do anything except make me feel warm and gooey all over.  I can accept that other people don't see the same thing as I do, and that I'm brighter than most people.

Humbler, too.

The headline for the review read "Dull," which I can accept and move on from.  Two sentences, though I have a problem with, for a reason not dealing with the sentences.  Just a second, I'll explain.

First, though, are the sentences:

"(The movie) doesn't even merit a review, other than as a warning to potential viewers."

and

"The story never comes together, and the films is really just a total bust."

As sentences, I can ignore them.  The reason why they bother me is that, at the end, the reviewer gives his rating: 4/10

4/10.  For a movie that "doesn't even merit a review."  "A total bust."

Why do people do this?  I've seen paid reviewers do this.  Bad mouth a movie straight through the review, then give it three stars.  Do they not understand the concept?  Three stars out of five is better than average!  Four out of ten is slightly less than average.  ZERO is a total bust!

Irritates me every time.  Any one else?

I do not want to imply, in any fashion, that I have ever had this problem at this site.  The IMDb, and my local paper have been the only places I've seen this sort of silliness.

* I will say that his/her/its review was the only negative one for the movie.  Unfortunately, his was the on the movie’s main page.  Otherwise I’d never have known and this rant would never have been.

Chalk it up to the era of inflated grades in our education system.  This reviewer is probably someone who consistently saw himself or other children at the bottom of his class getting steady C's.  He probably just sees this kind of thing as normal.  C (or 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 10) means you are the worst.

If it didn't merit a review, then why did he review it?

I believe they simply put the first user comment they receive for any particular movie/show on the main page with an excerpt at the top. At least it's not like someone there thought this was the best one to represent the movie, he just got there first.

I'm sure you're right.  All I was saying was that if it hadn't of been there, I wouldn't have seen it and gone nutso over it.
