NEVADA SMITH (1966) - This one was on TCM today as they were doing a special on Steve McQueen with NEVADA SMITH, THE BLOB, AND THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Anyway NEVEDA SMITH is a good western that is reminds you of HOMBRE with him being half Indian, COOL HAND LUKE in the Louisianna swamp chain gang, and TRINITY with similiar facial expressions like that of Terrence Hill. I like the ending with Karl Malden getting shot up in the legs and left in the creek to die or caught by the law. Great cinematography and locations shots.

With a good cast that includes Steve McQueen, Karl Malden, Brian Keith, Arthur Kennedy, Suzanne Pleshette, Raf Vallone, Pat Hingle, Howard Da Silva, Martin Landau, Paul Fix, Gene Evans, Josephine Hutchinson, and John Doucette, and in uncredited parts: Iron Eyes Cody, L. Q. Jones, and Strother Martin.

Supposedly, a prequel to "The Carpetbaggers," where Nevada Smith was played by Alan Ladd.

I think this is one of the films where Karl Malden calls one of the characters, Malden Sekulovich, his real birth name.

There's also a 1975 "Nevada Smith" TV movie spinoff/sequel of sorts starring Cliff Potts as Nevada and co-starring Lorne Greene and Adam West. I saw part of it on TBS years ago late at night but never saw it run again.

The original is OK, but I've never been as big a fan of it as other McQueen and western fans are. It gets dull in stretches for me during parts of his epic hunt to find the men who killed his parents. Besides McQueen looked to old to play the character.
