I was browsing Blockbuster tonight and it hit me (then I said ouch)

The Fast and The Furious - wasn't this movie just a Millenium version of Point Break?????

Let's consider the similarities:  *****SPOILERS******

(1) middle-aged cop wants to connect to a youth-oriented lifestyle
(2) gang of tight-knit buddies use their abilities to score money & finance lifestyle
(3) middle-aged cop has a soulful connection to the gang leader
(3) middle-aged cop hooks up with youthful babe, forgets his purpose for awhile
(4) gang does "one last job" but something goes horribly wrong
(5) middle-aged cop allows the leader to escape at the end
(7) middle-aged cop gets into lifestyle by the end

Anyone have any other examples of movies like this?

Demolition Man & Judge Dread

1. Stallone plays a cop wrongly convicted of killing innocent people.
2. He's framed by a villain that he has a connection to.
3. The villain has the backing of a government official.
4. The villain murders the official to escape his control.
5. Stallone is helped by a female cop who believes he's innocent.
6. There's a chase with Stallone handing off his vehicle to someone else.
7. The villain plans to create an army at a high-tech facility.
8. Stallone confronts him and they have their big battle.
9. The city is left without a leader as Stallone goes back to being just a cop.
10. Rob Schneider is in both.

Believe it or not but I've never seen Point Break.

It was one of those that slipped through the cracks for me.

Can't really say that I have any desire to see it either.

Maybe someday.

I think this just goes to show that there really aren't alot of new ideas in hollywood.

you have just hit upon a really sore spot for me in movie history.  the fast and the furious is the biggest rip off movie i have ever seen, and it just tries to tack in on culture [which seemingly worked] in order to make a buck

i've been quite outspoken on this in the past, so sorry if i'm being repetitive, but....

it completely [well almost] rips off a great hong kong film called legends of speed.

sure they changed a few things, added a few things to keep it original, and i'd say they combine it with other films [yes, point break is an excellent comparison.]
but here are some similar things:

they are based on street racing
they both have a slightly odd [is it a.d.d or something?] mechanics who are brilliant, but die in the end
they both have that wacky go into the engine effect as they drive.

that last one annoys me the most, because legend of speed didn't have the budget that furious did, so the grahics weren't great, but for pete's sake!!!

me and my friends love legend of speed to death, and were raving about it long before furious came out, yet now everyone's like 'wow, thats so new and original'

it just p**ses me off how writers can get away with such blatant unoriginality...

but we can't change it, so we'll have to keep watching the same old recycled crap until someone comes along with an actually good idea.

but then again, it's probably done already...

best two reasons to see it *********SPOILERS**************

(1) Keanu Reeves getting the s**t kicked out of him by a hot naked chick

(2) Anthony Kedis getting shot (that's the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for those who don't know)
