One of the newesy additions to my DVD collection is the widescreen director's cut of ASWANG. A cut version was released on video a few years back under the title THE UNEARTHING.

Anyway . . . it was the 1st horror movie ever shown at the Sundance Film festival (or so they claim on the box cover). It's about an unmarried pregnant girl who enters into a contract to give her baby to a guy who says he needs to have an heir in order to inherit his family's vast real estate holdings. To make a long story short, the movie involves Aswangs, which are creatures with long tongues who feed on the unborn. It has moments of brilliance, and manages to remain creepy from beginning to end. Like most low-budget horror films, it does have a few scenes that are unintentionally funny, but much of the humor is intentional (similar to THE EVIL DEAD). The movie has enough scares, creepiness, and gore to definitely keep you interested for its 82 minute running time. And it has the expected "chainsaw" scene.

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."
