I just got this DVD a couple of days ago.  What a great movie!  Certainly one of the top 2 or 3 westerns of all time.

The video transfer and the 5.1 digital sound are crisp and clear, and the movie itself is mesmerizing from beginning to end.

Henry Fonda (surprisingly) plays one of the most coldhearted outlaws in the history of western cinema . . . and he turns in a fine performance.  Charles Bronson is also very good as the mysterious man known as "Harmonica."  And Jason Robards rounds out the male cast as "Cheyenne."

Claudia Cardinale plays the female lead, and she is also very good.

And of course, everyone knows about the famous opening scene featuring Woody Strode and Jack Elam.

One of my favorite exchanges of dialogue in this movie:

Strode, Elam, and another man are facing off against Bronson.  They brought 3 horses with them.

Elam:  "It looks like we're one horse short."

Bronson:  "You brought two too many."

Then their guns start blazing . . .

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

Bought this Tuesday, I love the extras, even though I've seen the documentaries before (on AMC I think) they are great. So glad to have one of my all time favorites on DVD and can retire my copy taped from TV during a rare letterboxed showing without commercials. A masterpiece if ever I've seen one.

I didn't know it was out already, thanks for the tip.

Yup, great movie.  Does the back of the box give away Charles Bronson's back story like the video version did?

Finally, I get to see it in widescreen.  Now if I could only see it in a theater. . .
Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.

Great movie.  I bought this on LD a few years ago for nearly $40.  Curse you DVD creating bastards for taking so long!

Neville

One of the best movies ever, and among the best Leone films, together with "The good the bad and the ugly" and "Once upon a time in America". When I first watched, I could even think, I just stared to the screen speechless for the whole running time. And it is not a short movie, as you know.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

You just can't say enough good things about this film. Fantastic film. How much is the retail price at most stores? and what are the extras exactly? Sergio Leone was a genius with the help of Maricone's great music. Some of my favorite characters were played by Eli Wallach, Rod Stieger, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Lee Van Cleef, Clint Eastwood, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Terrence Hill, Jack Elam.

I bought it for $13.56 (and free shipping) from www.deepdiscountdvd.com

I have seen it in stores for between $14.95 and $19.95.

I haven't watched the extras yet, but it is a 2 disc set with one disc completely devoted to extras.

Yea, I just seen ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST at Suncoast for $19.99 and it was still tempting. Best Buy probably has it for $15 if Suncoast has it for $20.

A few years ago (in my pre DVD days) I did a lot of shopping for VHS tapes at Suncoast.  The last purchase I made there was a DVD of I'LL NEVER FORGET WHAT'S 'IS NAME, which was on sale for $2.99.  For the most part, I can't believe how outrageous their prices are.  Their DVDs are generally $5 more expensive (or more) than Best Buy and Circuit City.  And Best Buy and Circuit City are generally $1 to $5 more expensive than Deep Discount DVD.

Even with Suncoast's frequent buyer program you aren't getting any bargains there.
