The Burgomaster

I watched this DVD last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I probably haven't seen this movie for 5 or 6 years, so a repeat viewing was overdue.

The recently deceased Ron O'Neal plays "Priest," a slick cocaine dealer who snorts coke off the end of a cross that he wears on a necklace.  Priest decides that he wants to invest all of his money in one final coke purchase, sell it quickly, and retire with $500,000 in cash.

The movie was directed by the immortal Gordon Parks, Jr., and is one of the best of its genre.  The funky soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield (who appears on screen in a nightclub scene) includes some great tunes like "Super Fly," "Freddie's Dead," and "The Pusher."

The script is full of 70s street lingo and slang, which is fun to listen to, and Priest wears some kick-ass clothing.  The hand-held camera work gives the movie a raw, pseudo-documentary look, which adds to the film's hard-hitting, inner city realism.

This movie makes an absolutely PERFECT double feature with SHAFT.  Highly recommended.

              You've got that right,brotha!!!!

Too bad that Ron O'Neal unfortunately passed away the week this film finally came out on DVD,so that he could enjoy a new career revival of sorts(ala Sid Haig).

Those are the same two SUPER FLY and SHAFT that I haven't seen yet. Sounds like a great double feature.
