I recently purchased this DVD to fill in a hole in my collection of westerns.  (THE LONG RIDERS is one of those "must have" westerns).

If you haven't seen it, it is (yet another) retelling of the legend of Jesse James.  The interesting twist is the casting of real life brothers to play brothers in the movie.

* JESSE and FRANK JAMES - James and Stacy Keach
* THE YOUNGERS - David, Keith and Robert Carradine
* ED and CLELL MILLER - Dennis and Randy Quaid
* BOB and CHARLIE FORD - Nicholas and Christopher Guest

First of all, let me say that this is NOT one of the great all-time westerns.  Like many of Walter Hill's movies, it has sort of a comic book look and feel to it, which takes away from some of the "you are there" realism.  But it is extremely enjoyable and never gets boring.

The supporting cast is hit and miss.  I think the best supporting cast member is James Whitmore, Jr., who plays the leader of the Pinkertons.  The worst casting choice is James Remar as SAM STARR.  Sorry, but I have a hard time believing that Remar is a half-breed Indian (or Native American, to be politically correct).

As for the soundtrack, the music by Ry Cooder is excellent.

If you're looking for a fast-paced western with an interesting cast and a lot of bloody shootouts, this movie should satisfy you.  Just be warned: director Walter Hill will never be mistaken for Sergio Leone, John Ford or Henry Hathaway.

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

This a good flick with a nice dirty feel to it. I like the brothers gimic, as well. One of the few movies in which I enjoy a 2nd generation Carradine performance. I also lie the neato "ZING" the bullets make.

Everyone has potentially fatal flaws, but yours involve a love of soldiers' wives, an insatiable thirst for whiskey, and the seven weak points in your left ventricle.

Never seen it.

This film title belongs in that "movies that have porno titles" thread.

When I first saw THE LONG RIDERS I loved it as one of my favorite with that slow motion bank escape and the using of real brothers to play brothers. Good film, but the second time I watched it the film wore off on me unlike other good Westerns. Some how I didn't appreciate it as much. Not doubt THE LONG RIDERS is a must see for Western fans. Again I'll never forget how much I liked it the first time I saw it.
