I recently picked this up at Best Buy along with the first three Texas Chain Saw Massacre movies and some other stuff. Much like the first Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Deranged is based on the Ed Gein serial killer story, but sticks to a lot of the facts of the case (though some are completely made up or exageratted) and even has a "reporter" that narrates the story giving it an almost documentary-like feel. Motel Hell is okay in some parts, but tries to go in too many directions to really be enjoyable. All in all not a bad buy for a midnight movies double dvd.

I bought the split Motell Hell/Deranged dvd a while back. Although the print to Motell isn't outstanding I'm just happy to have a copy of it.

I was going to buy this until I found out that DERANGED is the theatrical version, and not the restored version.  I have the restored version on VHS, and I'd feel funny about buying the other version.  I think there are only 1 or 2 additional scenes (including a scene of Ezra Cobb opening up a skull, popping the eyeball out, and sticking a spoon into the brains), but still . . .
