The film you're looking for is Doomsday Machine.  You can see where the string is attacthed to hold up the planet.  Plus, I'm pretty sure it's in the public doman, so you won't have to worry about rights issues.  A still of the scene can be found here:

If you want an animated planet blown up, there was an animated film a couple of years ago, that blew up an animated version of earth, which was pretty cool. I don't remember off hand the name of the film, but, let me go back and check my sources, and I'll get back to you.

You wouldn't be talking about the one with the two little blobs that turn into more and more advanced crazy fighting robot  creatures until one develops a doomsday gun which nukes the planet, are you?  If so, that is a killer short.  If not, it's still a killer short.

The film I was thinking about was "Titan A.E." Weak storyline, but great animation. Of course, it is so new, I doubt if it is in the public domain.
