And since it hasn't been mentioned directly during this topic, I think, I'll go ahead and recommend Gustav Hasford's novel "The Short Timers" to anyone here who hasn't read it already. It's the book Kubrick based FMJ on, while it has three acts rather than two, and is well worth seeking out.
