'm new here so if someone has discussed this before, sorry. This is a great place to pick up DVDs for $5 or box sets of up to 6 DVDs for $24.95. Lots of cheese and lots of classics. Silents too. I've bought a ton of stuff from then and have never had a problem. Check it out.

And again I apologize if someone has already posted this link.

Cheese is good food. So are the movies. Not food that is, just cheese.

Yea, most of my collection is from Oldies.com, but I just buy them at the store for $6.99 or less. Most are good quality. HIGH SCHOOL CEASAR had a bad transfer, but the rest are quite good. Good company.

The Burgomaster

I bought 5 DVDs from Oldies.com

* BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA - Surprisingly good quality!

* KILLERS FROM SPACE - Many scenes are grainy and scratchy.

* KILLER SHREWS - Good quality.

* THE WASP WOMAN - Decent quality.

* THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE - The bloody uncut version!  Very good quality, too!

Warning:  Alpha Video (who runs Oldies.com) is notorious for using underhanded tricks to get the source material for their DVDs without paying for rights.  They've even been known to take other companies' remastered DVDs and duplicate the movie right off 'em, screwing over the legitimate company.

Just so you know who you're supporting when you buy.

Who's your source on this?  It is possible that Alpha has licensed them from the company that originally mastered them (like Sinister Cinema).

If it's unconfirmed, it's just rumor.

I have a few comments about this:

1.  If the companies who are getting screwed haven't started legal action against Alpha, that's their problem.  I'm not a huge supporter of Alpha (I only bought 5 of their DVDs for $5 apiece).  Alpha is innocent until proven guilty, and therefore, a legitimate retailer in my eyes.

2.  Most of Alpha's movies are public domain titles (and therefore, NO ONE has exclusive rights to them).

3.  Many of Alpha's titles are only available from Alpha, so there is no place else to get them.

I'm a 100% supporter of law-and-order, but Alpha hasn't crossed the line as far as I know.

That's another point I was going to make.  If they're stealing them, where are they getting them from? Alpha is the only place to get THE BASKETBALL FIX and TWO-DOLLAR BETTOR (just to name a couple) that I know of.

As far as cheapy PD companies, Alpha is top of the heap in my experience.  Better than Brentwood, Platinum, Front Row, or...urk!...Diamond Entertainment in terms of quality, service and variety of product.

Man, I'm sorry if I p**sed off anyone. That wasn't the purpose of my post. I just like the stuff I get from them. Sorry for the ruckus.

Pus:

No ruckus here.  Just routine bad movie discussions!

Fred Olen Ray at  Retromedia is suing Alpha for just that thing, and it's not just rumor; I have it from Fred himself.

Fred Olen Ray, eh?

Well innocent until proven guilty... (which may just be an excuse for me to stock up on Alpha titles until...or if...Fred wins his case; it might be hard to prove it in court)

The Burgomaster

Aha!  Fred Olen Ray.  Now THERE'S a reliable source of legal information.
