Just got done watching SMALLVILLE.  I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.  Of course, considering I thought I'd hate it, that's not saying much.

Let me get the things I don't like out of the way.  I don't like the decision to make Ma and Pa Kent so young.  In the show they look to be in their early 40's.  Any fool knows Ma and Pa Kent are old.  It's just an established fact.  I also don't like the conceit that Lex Luthor and Clark Kent would know each other from so early on.  I've always liked the idea of Luthor being a brilliant industrialist that Superman would out of necessity come across, not someone he'd know from his younger days.  I think it plays better to the "forces of nature" division between them.  Also, the meteor shower at the beginning seemed to contrived, put there for the sole development of the series.  Looks like they're making Smallville to be some sort of locus of weirdness, a mistake in my book.

As for the show itself, I think it could do with a little more subtlety and a little less angst.  As for the angst, this is a teenage show, so I think we're stuck with it.  I just hope it doesn't take on an overpowering quality.  The subtlety, bring on a heavy dosage.  I don't mind symbolism, but please, no more crucifixions.  And that scene in the graveyard with Clark standing with the wings behind him?  Terrible.

That put aside, the show was actually enjoyable.  I think all the characters came across quite well.  Not that they had a lot of chance for development in one episode, but there is definite potential with these actors.  At first I was worried that they'd make Clark into a mere prettyboy (the promo posters did nothing to aleve these fears), but in the show he came across with that quality that may, overtime, develop into honest to goodness herosim.

Of course, that's all my opinion.  Just as an aside, I'm a die-hard comics fan, but superheros can kiss my ass.  I'm of the opinion that the current state of the industry is being suffocated by wanky-ass superhero comics.  You might want to keep that in mind if you're a Superman fan.  (Of course, I'm yet to meet a fan of Superman outside his iconic qualities.)

But, ask me again after next episode.  I doubt I'll follow the show anyway as I don't like scheduling for these hour long dramas.

Hummmm....haven't seen it yet, but the feeling i get so far, makes me..oh...leery. That opening promo made me think of "Evil in the cornrows" or somesuch idea. The thing i'll be watching for, is the relationship of Clark with his parents. They are an important part of forming Superman, by molding his his force of ethical and moral behavior. When push comes to shove, its whats inside that makes a fireman or cop run back into a burning building, that could come down on top of him at any second, to help compleat strangers escape death. Need i say more?

I like it myself it's way better show  than that stupid Lois and Clark. The makers trying to cut down on the Superboy stuff to let us know who Clark Kent is and how he's trying to learn about his powers. As for Ma and Pa Kent I like them young it's better than to see them old and dying fast without know them. So I don't care anybody say I like the show and I'm sticking to my opinon.
