I sit here in front of my crummy Compaq Presario with inadequate memory and a slugabug processor, wondering why the hell even Doom II crashes these days, and I ask myself why I don't venture into the world of video gaming on the boob toob.
So I ask you all:  Of the Big Three out there, which is best in your opinions, best game variety, playability/user friendliness, whatever.  Christmas is coming so I need to buy my kids a present.

Well, I've said it before. A good computer can do anything those game platforms can do, and a whole lot more. The only reasons I can see for buying any of them are purely marketing - exclusive titles and whatnot. That and the rather circular argument that there are more games for them. If more people played on their PC, there would be more games for it. Game platforms are a throwback to the 70s and 80s that should have gone out of style a decade ago, were it not for marketing and ignorance. I'd much sooner put the money into a decent computer - something I can use for work, play, research, communication, etc. Aside from the old Atari I've had since 1984, I'll never own a game platform.

I'm with Andy with the PC argument.  I do play most of my games on my PC but I also own a PS2 and a GameCube.

Pros/Cons:

1. XBOX
Pro: XBOX has better graphics than all other consoles.
Con: HUGE F'ING CONTROLLER!  Smaller title library than PS2. Charge for online play w/ XBOX Live.

2. PS2
Pro: Huge title library and very user friendly.  Free online play!
Con: Cheaply made.  Mine broke after falling about 5 inches to the floor.

3. GameCube
Pro: Cheap.  Good graphics.
Con: Mostly kiddie games released for it.

Overall if I were you I'd say it'd be a choice between the PS2 and XBOX.  Both are great machines.  Just depends on what you're into.

sure, the xbox is the most powerful system, and nintendo has great children's games, but the ps2 has some amazing games for not a lot of money...i highly recommend KATAMARI DAMACY...a strange japanes import by NAMCO that basically employs an alien to roll around a sticky ball, in the early stages you achieve the size goal by picking up tacks, matches, legos, mosquitos, etc...later challenges find you rolling over dogs, cats, people, chairs, hot dog vendors, islands, houses, cars, etc...all to turn into stars and constellations which mysteriously disappeared from the sky...also a great game for kids is SLY COOPER and SLY COOPER 2...the interaction of GTA but in a childrens cartoon world...everything about these games are amazing...the game constantly achieves perfect review scores.

the controllers by nintendo and ps2 are smaller and more comfortable.

i'd go with either nintendo gcb for the mario games or ps2 for some great childrens games...plus if you need another dvd player, there you go. great if you take it to a hotel room and the kids want to watch their movies.

hope this helps

Thanks to all.  I think I'll upgrade to a better PC.

You can get smaller controllers for the Xbox now... actually, they've been available for quite some time.

Never played Game Cube.

I have both PS2 and X-Box.  I like X-Box better (the standard controller is better and the fact that you don't need a memory card to save games are both nice features).  I probably won't buy anymore PS2 games, unless the games I want are not available on X-Box.

If Doom II used to work well on the same system, but now crashes, it may be time to format the HD and re-install Windows.

++++

i think a x box is better too caz of its features and so wat if the controllers big it looks way better than ps2 i have both ps2 and xbox so id say its probably better in quality but games i like ps2 games better even though x box has better graphics but xbox games only stay on 2 to 3 topics like genre shooting racing and action i like other genres too thats all The Burgomaster wrote:
