MAN FROM DEEP RIVER (1972) - The first of the Italian Cannibal films directed by Umberto Lenzi and starring Ivan Rassimov and Me Me Lai. This film really dosn't center around cannibalism, but rather it's a story about a photographer who goes deep into the jungle near the Thai/Burmese border and is captured by a primitive tribe. The main character slowly becomes part of the tribe as they won't allow him to leave. The tribe is attacked by a neighboring cannibal tribe who captures and eats one of the native woman in a very graphic scene. This is a very good film and this is also the first of three cannibal films co-starring Me Me Lai. The film is similiar in style to JUNGLE HALOCAUST, EATEN ALIVE, and the lesser of the bunch SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD. There are noticable differences in each of the stories of each of these films.

Interesting. I'd heard rumors that Lenzi actually made a good movie, I just haven't seen one yet. Do you know if Giannetto de Rossi did any effects work on this film? I have also read, but cannot verify the accuracy, that Lenzi at least once, if not several times, used footage from this film in some of his later cannibal flicks to save money.

Yes, but Lenzi didn't make the two films that followed because he wanted to much money as MAN FROM DEEP RIVER did very well at the box office, but what you said is accurate about some footage from MAN FROM DEEP RIVER being used in JUNGLE HOLOCAUST and EATEN ALIVE since the film belonged to the production company and not the director.
