This turned out to be a fun movie for all the Marines.  Strange, considering how many did not really enjoy “Orca” on Christmas day.  I guess it is because “Bug” is just open to MST-style riffing and wisecracks.

I have to tell you, the 70’s was probably the absolutely worst time for fire-starting cockroaches to surface from a crack in the ground.  Everyone was wearing polyester!  Plus we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how the bugs got inside of the tailpipes.

The totally inexplicable part of the movie occurs when the main character, despite losing his wife to a horrible death (burned by the cockroaches), decides to save one.  You see, all the bugs are dying, because the pressure is much less than they are used to having.  He then breeds the female fire roach with a normal cockroach.  Why is this a good idea?

Yup, the scientist gets a super fire cockroach, which is adapted for normal atmospheric pressure.  They are also incredibly smart and eat meat.

One Marine, Cpl Kimble, actually said, “If those cockroaches spell out some word on the wall, I am leaving.”  I just replied, “Goodbye.”  Everyone started laughing as the bugs complied and Kimble jumped up and stormed out.

Amusing MST-d line:
“I’ve been eating a diet of intentionally burned toast, just so I can better understand these creatures.”

Oh, a final thought:  sure, grabbing a fire-creating cockroach with your bare hand might hurt.  However, I would sure as heck do so if that was the only way to get it off my face.

Havn't seen BUG yet, well, my list grows longer. I saw SLUGS a couple years ago, but BUG might be more to my liking. SQUIRM was a fun film, SLUGS wasn't a very interesting film.

"Bug", Ah how many times did USA show that in the 80s and early 90s on Saturday afternoons? How many times did I watch it? Way too many for my own good. I just had to see that ending over and over.

Just think of the fun the cockroaches could have if they remade it. Instead of polyester, you'd have all the kids running around in those baggy pants that are so loose they wouldn't know the critters were on them until it was too late.

Since a Bradford Dillman critter flick went over pretty well, maybe you could try the original "Piranha". Even people I know who hate b-movies will watch that one at least once.
