The new Justice League cartoon premieres on Cartoon Network tonight at 8:00.  (Check local listings.)  Just thought I'd remind everybody.

A new George Carlin special also premieres tonight, but that's not as available to people and a bit out of bounds for this board.

Well, us Limeys probably have to wait six months to get it on the European Cartoon Network - so what was it like? It looks very good indeed.

I was thinking the other day that D.C comics owe insane genius Grant Morrison a huge debt in resurrecting this team from comic book limbo. He's also doing pretty much the same with New X- Men at the moment.

I didn't see it, but I just have to ask one thing: Is Aquaman there?

Squishy

Aquaman will not be a part of the regular team, but will appear as a guest star, in his current get-up (bare chest, long hair and beard, hook-hand, anger-management issues) as opposed to the "Super-Friend-with-attitude" he appeared as in a semi-recent Superman episode.

The regular team will be Supes, Bats, Wonder Woman (fresh off Paradise Island and not well versed in the World of Man yet), Flash (ex-Kid-Flash Wally West), Green Lantern (a less failure-prone version of John Stewart, as the team's Token Kick-Ass Black Man), Martian Manhunter, and Hawkgirl, who will be the victim of an accidental intergalactic transporter mishap (*cough* Voyager *cough*), unable to return to her home planet. No Hawkman, no Steel (?!), no Plastic Man--but there will apparently be plenty of guest-stars and some nostalgia trips as the League gets kicked back to the 50s in one episode.

I was hoping Oracle would be part of the cast; it would have been fun to watch the little bastards deal with Barbara Gordon--in a wheelchair--nerding it up. (Someone I mentioned this to argued that kids would be disturbed by a familiar figure being "disabled" in a cartoon. What century IS this???)

We all love the SuperFriends, but... http://seanbaby.com/super.htm

Hummmm. Not too bad! Nice to see a G.L in action, even if its not Hal Jordon or Kyle Rayner. Be fun to see who the guest stars are. The "War of the worlds" plot was intresting. Liked the take on the triped walkers. Could be good.

Mofo Rising

I liked it.  Got a couple of quibbles, though.

First, I don't like Superman's voice.  It just doesn't sound very Superman-y.  And also along Superman lines, he was comically ineffectual in the show.  Whenever anything would happen, Supes was the first to drop.  It's like the writers couldn't figure out how to handle the most powerful superhuman without upsetting balance, so they just hamstrung him the whole show.

Also, the strength of people's powers were wildly inconsistent.  Take for example the laser beams of the tripod things.  We're shown earlier Superman being blasted out of the air by one of them.  Later we see Wonder Woman easily block the beams with her bracelets.  What the hell?  The walkers are one moment indestructible, the next they are easily destroyed by Hawkgirl's mace.  And in the finale, the spaceship is taking off, so Wonder Woman lassos it and easily holds it in place. . . by herself.  That's pushing credibility.

(Man, that makes me sound like Comic Book Guy.)

Anyway, the action scenes were quite good.  I also liked the quality of the animation, hopefully they can keep it up.  Did anybody else see a similarity between the tripods and the "Angels" from Evangelion?

Vermin Boy

Heh, I love that site. Anyone catch the episode of "Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law" where Apache Chief sued the coffee shop after he spilled coffee on his lap and lost the ability to "enlarge?" Some great depositions from lesser Superfriends, like Black Vulcan and Wonder Twin Zan:

ZAN: ...So, anyway, the only reason Wonder Woman wasn't there to save the day was because she was taking a bath at the time.

HARVEY BIRDMAN: Could you tell us how you know her whereabouts?

ZAN: Because, um, I was the bathwater...

Flangepart

Wow! Where was this? I'd like to see that. Was it part of Space Ghost, Coast to Coast? Gotta love the Cartoon Network promps, BTW......and the punch line..."Not as much as the Invisable man!"

Jay O'Connor

Speaking of Cartoon Network, I love the commercial that juxtaposes "Super Friends" with "Powerpuff Girls".

The two funny parts are:

When Aquaman admits his telepathic ability is useless and Wonder Woman just rolls her eyes.

When Blossom tells Wonder Women, "Someday we'll be as well developed as you", followed by an embarrased silence

Squishy

Love that commercial. Don't get the Cartoon Network (insert long, raving strings of shockingly violent curses here), so I got it online, along with Superfriends: Whazzup?.

Blossom: "We're big fans of Old School."

Future Boy 3000

This is kinda off topic, but I could never buy Aquaman on the JLA. He's got lame powers.
Ok, sure he's got super-strenght. But does a team that already has Superman, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Women really need that?
And the whole talking to fish thing is so lame! What's he going to do with that power? Lead the villian to a body of water and get a school of trout to attack him?
The whole hook thing was just made to make him seem "cooler" (but does any one care? course not!).

Plus he has girly hair and whines too much.

It's part of Cartoon Network's new Adult Swim lineup, which airs Sunday and Thursday nights from 10 to 1. Space Ghost is in it, along with similarly-themed shows retooling older cartoons (Harvey Birdman, The Brak Show, Sealab 2021); Aqua Teen Hunger Force, an original toon from the same team (about talking food products); the former UPN series Home Movies; and the anime series Cowboy Bebop.

You may have to wait a while before you see that Birdman ep, though; Since it's the only one made from completely new animation without a season already in the can, there have only been two episodes shown in the past 3 months. It's worth waiting for, though, as it's one of the best shows in the block. Incidentally, the other episode aired involved a custody case between the two scientists from Johnny Quest. Rumor has it that a future episode will see Scooby and Shaggy busted for posession!
