Couple dvds I've seen will play music before a movie "Black Hole", Star Trek: the Motion Picture")- what's the point of this other than to listen to some music and look at a blank field of stars??

That's nothing.  LAWRENCE OF ARABIA starts out with something like a five minute overture accompanying a black screen.  I sat through that whole thing and as soon as the actual movie started the dvd stopped working.  That's democracy for you.

And let's not forget 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
