Scarface (1932)

SCARFACE (1932) - Wow, great ganster film starring a guy named Paul Muni and Boris Karloff even has a role as one of the gang leaders (he was actually making this film at the same time he was making Frankenstein).  Howard Hawks directs this fine film. This is a truely great film with story, dialogue, and action. The action is exceptional for the time. This is a good film for the collection. TCM showed it tonight. This is must viewing................

Oh, yeah, Scott!! This is a good one! Muni is appropriately slimy as Tony, and uses that well to communicate his creepy relationship with his sister. George Raft also appears as the unfortunate Guido. If you enjoyed Paul Muni in SCARFACE, you should also check out I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG.

Hey Deej where have you been. THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (1939) is on TCM as we speak.

The original SCARFACE is a great film. I was very surprised.

I really enjoyed this one. I actually got the DVD when I bought a special annveriey set of  the Pacino Scarface.

This is one that I've been wanting to see for years now, ever since I saw the remake.

I'll keep an eye on TCM, hopefully they'll show it again soon.

I read somewhere that Hawks intended the film to be an unofficial Al Capone biopic, and that when Al Capone learnt of that, after the film was released, he called Paul Muni in person to be brought in front of him. This done, he proceeded to insult him and every single person related for the film. Paul Muni was scared s**tless.

That's an interesting story Neville. From the looks of the film SCARFACE and Capones reaction Hawks and Muni probably hit the mark with his portrayal of gangsters. How about Tony's assistant answering the phone. That was funny.....

Marlon Brando hung out with some mafia figures to get ready for his role in THE GODFATHER.
