These creatures are amazing. How would you like to live for 250 years and still have the organs of a teenager?

Give the guys a break, watch for and avoid them on the road, and give 'em hand if you see one on his back.

Read about them here.

Very cool article and the title reminded me of "Tuck Everlasting."  The part about Green Turtles trimming old seagrass to promote fresh, tender growth is fascinating.  I learned something new today, thank you.

Last summer we were taking the children to the beach and, in the morning light, I saw a box turtle trying to cross the road.  I blocked the road with me car, quickly got out, and picked him up.  We took him back into a large wooded area, with a pond nearby, and let him go.

Also had a big old box turtle that lived in our backyard in Georgia (it was bordered by a stream and had a fair amount of woods/wild areas).  When I mowed the grass, I was always on the lookout for him.  Lucked out too, as what caused me to start doing this was sweeping my foot through tall grass when we first moved in and I managed to connect with him.  He went tumbling across the lawn.  After that, we would see him or other box turtles and always give them some fruit (strawberries, etc) to eat.  Katie has pictures of one right in front of our door, munching away on his snack.

Yeah, we live in the country and see quite a few tortoises in the summer. I did have that snapping turtle trying to get in the garage that time. I posted it on Odinn7's original Attack of the Squirrels thread.

Now I feel bad. I usta catch snapping turtle and eat them. An old farmer Nickolia Siskaninitz taught me how to properly butcher and clean them. An amazing thing- when you cut their heads off, the legs will continue moving for HOURS...untill all the blood is drained(which is done by hanging it upside by the tail with a rope and running a garden hose on it.)
