HAPPY NEW YEAR ...........everyone. Been off the board for one whole week only because of an illness. Went to a Christmas Day party and became very ill. Couldn't sleep or eat for 3 days then my wife took be to the doctor and the doctor put me out till next week. Trying to get back to normal. 2006 was a very hard year for me and ended in almost the very worst of ways. Nice to see all the new members on the board. Haven't been able to stomach any bad movies (nor anything at all). Just wanting to say hello to my friends here at on the forum. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I have a question about the ball dropping at Times Square in New York.

I live in Central Time Zone.  New York is in the Eastern time zone.
While watching the ball dropping on TV, it occurred to me that either the people in New York drop the ball four seperate times for each of the four time zones, or they drop it one time only at 1 am.

The TV broadcast said it was live...if that were true, then the people in NY celebrated at 1 in the morning, an hour after the actual New Year.
Or...do they drop the ball four times, one for each time zone and only air that dropping to each time zone on TV?

Anyone?

Let me answer that Ash as I live in NYC.

We drop the ball only once at midnight here. The networks probably delay it for other time zones.

Ah...that explains it.
So when the TV says "Live" it's actually a lie.

Which is why I hate watching those shows. I live on the west coast and would rather watch something local, not something that happened 3 hours ago. TeddyR

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

rich is right, it's most likely a tape delay for each time zone. They do that for the network morning news shows as well now. I've noticed they refer to it being "X minutes past the hour" rather than "It's now seven seventeen" like they do on the live local morning news, here at least. Just as the nightly network newscast does a separate broadcast for the West Coast with news update and program changes as needed.

The ball drop was probably recorded "live to tape" and it aired in the same 24 hour period, they would  consider it "live" for broadcast purposes unless they had to edit out something for decency or technical reasons. It the same principle as when they tape The Tonight Show or The Late Show in the afternoon or early evening and air it in its regular slot.

I can remember MTV used to celebrate the countdown for each time zone in the continental US. The last time or two I saw their show, they did a shorter show and just repeated it through the night.

And Happy New Year to you all. Hope you're feeling better, Scott, I just figured you were busy with holiday stuff IRL. My uncle got slammed with major food poisoning at Thanksgiving, and almost wound up in the hospital from it. Being ill on a holiday increases the suck factor by multiple factors.

Happy New Years gang.

I had a bit of a get together of friends at my place, which was nice [it wasn't too hot, unlike last year].  As a nice touch, I borrowed a projector from work and played it on one of my walls for 'arty' effect.

I made a few clip discs to show snippets of some films.  I tried to find more films that friends hadn't watched/were visually interesting and included scenes from:

Quadrophenia
Barbarella
Mirrormask
The Warriors
Belle De Jour
Belle et la Belle
Destroy All Monsters
Buckaroo Banzai
The Abonimable Dr Phibes
Faster p***ycat Kill Kill
The Dark Crystal
Natural City

When they finished shortly after 12 I threw on Transformers: The Movie.  That just resulted in a bunch of my friends hijacking the soundsystem and DVD player and stopped the music, hooked the dvd up to the sound and had their own movie night involving drunk people shouting out "GO Optimus" or "what is this crap!?' and they all had their own little 'quote-along.'  That must have amused the people who had no idea of what was going on to no end.

After that, the music went back on again and I put on briefly Jan Svanmajer's "Alice" and the 80s Cartoon of Super Mario Bros.  Finished the night with Masters of the Universe and a bit of Flash Gordon.

With the exception of Transformers, the movies/clips were for background use, and it worked out great.  Other than the clean up and lack of sleep, it was a fantasticly successful night.

So that was lots of fun.  Hope you all had a good one!
