I finally got around to watching Barry Lyndon this past weekend.  It was pretty good and it definitely sticks with you for awhile (I'm still reviewing scenes in my head as I do daily chores, for example).  I knew I was in for a long movie but as I watched it, I didn't seem to notice the time going by, which is a good sign.  I love the opening especially.

Next I will have to watch The Killing, one of Stanley's older flicks.  I Hope it is as good.

Has to be 2001 followed by Dr. Strangelove , Spartacus, and Full Metal Jacket.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

That's a tough question for me... I like all of the films I've seen- which is everything but Eyes Wide Shut- and they all seem very good. I'd have to go with Clockwork Orange simply for how amazed I was after seeing it... I've never seen a film like it- before or since.

I won't try to say it was his best movie but my favorite Kubrick flick is Eyes Wide Shut, because I love the night scenes, the element of quest, the crazed mystery, the quiet puzzling tone to it all. I expected to hate it and I adored it.

impossible question:

every film he made was a masterpiece and so very, very different

I don't really have a favorite. I only picked 2001: A Space Odyssey because I had to pick something, and I only sat down and watched it all the way through almost a year ago. Ever since then I've been studying it every time I watched it, looking for every nuance and detail that I can spot in it. The special effects in that film are truly special, especially the zero gravity effects that were done long before CGI was even dreamed of in filmmaking, like the flight attendant lady that grabs the sleeping passenger's floating pen out of the air and puts it back in his pocket for him. It is subtle special effects like that that made Kubrick such a genius filmmaker. And of course my all-time favorite part of any movie:

First rule is, 'The laws of Germany'
Second rule is, 'Be nice to mommy'
Third rule is, 'Don't talk to commies'
Fourth rule is, 'Eat kosher salamis'

To rank them all in order of my top favorite to my least favorite among these fine films:

Eyes Wide Shut
2001: A Space Odyssey
Barry Lyndon
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove
Lolita
Spartacus
Paths of Glory
Full Metal Jacket

Ain't a bad one in the bunch!
