I've been on a BLACK SABBATH bender for the past week or so; specifically the under-rated and widely ignored late '80s/early '90s Sabbath era with Tony Martin on vocals.

I kinda wish I'd been paying more attention when these albums were current, but at that time I was deep in the midst of my all-thrash-metal, all-the-time phase so Black Sabbath were barely on my radar. When I finally started to discover those albums all these years later, naturally they're all out of print and hard to find so they go for st00pid $$ on the secondary market. That figures. (Thank goodness for cheap Russian bootleg CDs! Hah...)

Anyway, I've managed to get my hands on four out of the five Martin-era studio albums (Headless Cross, TYR, Cross Purposes, and Forbidden) over the past few months (the only one I'm missing is The Eternal Idol) and while none of them will ever be called Sabbath's finest hour, there are some damn good tunes hidden among these records, esp. Headless Cross (which essentially picks up where the Dio era of the band left off) and Cross Purposes. I haven't owned TYR or Forbidden long enuff to get to know either of 'em well yet, but from the few spins I've given them, TYR sounds quite good, but Forbidden is pretty "meh." (I understand that the band members don't look back on Forbidden very fondly, either...)
