Hey guys,

Have I missed some definitive movies to check out? I'm running out titles to give a try this weekend. I know there's a ton of painful b-movies to endure before I can find a few more gems but wanted to get some recommendations of some really good ones I can review. Here's one's I've watched and written about so far.

obviously I can always follow the line of sequels like doing the rest of the trancers, or elm st. but was looking for something a bit more unique. something fun and campy or something that had that great desolate nighttime atmosphere of movies like Repoman, the Warriors, Escape from New York.

Purty good site you've got going so far!

WAXWORK, though far from having a nighttime atmosphere is one of my favorite campy 1980s films. The sequel is plenty campy, but that's just about all it has going for it.

NEON MANIACS, I think, has the "desolate running nighttime atmosphere" for one short part, and is plenty campy (The part in question has our heroes boarding a totally empty subway train).

THE RETURN OF COUNT YORGA and to a lesser extent it's predecessor, convey a creepy nighttime atmosphere, but they're both played pretty straight with the exception of one or two scenes.

FRIGHT NIGHT and it's sequel are campy and have excellent effects, the climactic nights of the films are both picnics for effects buffs and I think may have the atmosphere you're looking for.

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS is highly praised for it's camp value, but is too manic at the end for the "Desolate nighttime" to sink in IMO.

.ROLLERBOOGIE is a slice of 70's disco fever with Linda (the EXORCIST) Blair.
.The RETURN of COUNT YORGA- Robert Quarry as a vampire in modern day California!
.MOTHERS DAY-I was going to post this one! Really! Bloody,messy,even...(dare I say it?) funny (?) horror film.
.ABOMNIBLE DR.PHIBES was made in 1971,and is an excellent movie with Price as a horribly disfigured mad genuis out for revenge on those  he feels responible for the death of his wife. He kills them in the most unique ways. No little bit of 'Tales from the Crypt" black humor include. A classic!
.DRACULA vs. Frankenstien-made in the 70's...but with the old time stars,I can understand why you would believe it too be much older. But BEWARE! This was made by the same guy who gave the world such (hack! coff!) classics as SATAN'S SADISTS and CINDERELLA 3000 ...Al Adamson.
.EVIL SPAWN and the ALIENS DEADLY SPAWN are two enitly differnt movies. One is about a mutant beast in a basement which breeds flesh eating babies-(...DEADLY SPAWN) the other about a woman who takes a drug and becomes a giant ugly limb tearing...bug. Both ecellent films,though...in a cheezy,no-budget way!
Supernatural?...perhaps. Baloney?...Perhaps not!" Bela Lugosi-the BLACK CAT (1934)

I've always felt that The Legend of Boggey Creek has a pretty effective creepy night time atmosphere.

I agree West World was a good movie. I compared it to a long Star Trek episode but that's a compliment:) I'd still define as a b-movie though...but strangely only small amount of blood, no breasts and I guess the evil robot would be the beast.

I checked my local video store for some of those titles and couldn't find any of them. argh. our video store is weak. I'll get as many as I can into my Netflix Queue. Though I have to try to do a video review tonight for dchighway.com I'm thinking either "Gone in 60 seconds..original version" or "big trouble in little China" I've seen big trouble many times but it's been a long time. never seen gone in 60 seconds.

"The Abominable Dr. Phibes" is, quite possibly, the perfect black comedy.  Price is perfect as Phibes, the inspector is great, and many of the deaths are horrifying and/or amusing in a subtle way.  I have reviewed it (a cooperative effort with Dr. Freex) and would recommend anyone give it a try.

"Evil Spawn" is a pretty much a bad remake of "The Wasp Woman."  The music sounds like it was directly copied from "The Thing."  If you want to go for a movie that copies "The Thing," then try "Unknown Origin."  Man, that film gets me angry, because it is a no-talent job of stealing from another movie.  Heck, some of the lines are even the same.

Andrew

I made a mistake here.  Looking at RCMerchant's post confused me, but now I know why.

The roller skating film I wanted to recommend is "Skatetown USA" NOT "Rollerboogie."  RC described "Rollerboogie" correctly, which is how I caught the mistake.  Geez, I'm undecided if that was caused by old age or by my work schedule the last week, not enough sleep, and donating blood (I'm always loopy after doing that).

Anyway:  "Skatetown USA"

I didn't see any of these on the lists so far.

Warriors of the Wasteland

Steel Dawn

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone

And you thought Trek isn't cool.
