Old Horror movie about telekynisis and brains

Ok I have looked and looked and I cannot remember/find this movie.

I will start with the description:
It was in the 80s I think, in color and classified as a horror movie I am almost certain.

Basically thier is this loser and his friend.  The loser (star of the movie) finds a book some how about telekynisis and using/unlocking the power of your mind.

He reads and studies it and eventually he starts to be able to move things with his mind.  There is one shot in a bar/club where someone knocks over thier drink and he freezes it and pulls it back up on the table with all the liquid back inside it. 

He then finds out that he can use this power to control people, namely women and make them do whatever he wants.  He goes after the newly aquired girlfriend of his friend and makes her or at least trys to make her do things with him.  Something makes me think he doesn't succeed because he desides he isn't powerful enough and hunts down the author of the book.

I can't remember if the author is alive, but he goes to his house and finds a machine in his attic that amplifies your brain power.  After using the machine some how he transforms into a giant brian.  I think he kills some people and then is eventually stopped I dont' remember much of the end.

I saw this when I was a child and it scared the crap out of me, which is probably why I don't know how it ends since I probably didn't watch it HA.

If anyone knows what this movie is PLEASE email me, I have been looking for years... but the whole loser/telekynisis/brain/horror thing is hard to search for because there are just soooo many.

 I can't seem to find a link to any screen captures.  And the summary mentions that he looses his hair and mutates until his brain explodes out of his head.. attacking people not anything about a "machine" that he finds from the author.

Also they mention something about aliens taking over one of the girls.. I don't remember any of that stuff but that doesn't mean it isn't that.  If any knows where on the web I could get some stills or pics from that movie to check and see if I remember anything I would appreciate it.  But I don't think it is it, because of those inconsistencies...
