I love the early 90s music ...and there was a lot out there that didn't get overhyped (and a hell of a lot that did)...here's a sample of what I can remember:

Rev. Powell

Not overplayed, I think.

Tom Waits - Goin' Out West

"Tony Franciosa used to date my Ma."
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

Well, it's certainly been overplayed by me, but I don't think I've ever heard anybody else listening to it.

And just for a goof, an interesting '90s sidenote: Extra Fancy was a rock band extensively marketed as having an openly gay lead singer. The band quickly disappeared, but this cover of the spiritual "Sinnerman" was featured on an accompanying soundtrack to the Mega Man television show (hence the video below).

Also, the criminally underplayed Prick, whose self-titled album released on Nothing Records back in 1995 is one of my all-time favorites.

Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.

Personally most early Nineties music just didn't appeal. I didn't like rave or grunge. There were some good songs about though:

Happy Mondays - "Step On"
Blur - "There's No Other Way", "For Tomorrow"
Inspiral Carpets - "This Is How It Feels", "She Comes In The Fall"
James - "Sit Down", "Come Home", "Sometimes"
Stone Roses (Really late Eighties) - "Fools Gold", "I Am The Resurrection", "Going Down", "Made Of Stone", "Mersey Paradise"
Tasmin Archer - "Sleeping Satellite"
The Wonderstuff - "Size Of A Cow"
Chris Isaac - "Wicked Game"
Suede - "Stay Together"
Charlatans - "Only One I Know"
New Order - "Regret"
