Star Trek.com's remote control phaser

If I had one of these things (which look great, by the way) and I pointed it at my TV set, everyone in my household would get the hell out of the way.

I used to have one of those phaser remotes, but it was the style they used in The Next Generation.  I lost the instruction sheet so I couldn't figure out what code to program into it to control my stuff, so I sold it at a garage sale.  Then a week later, guess what I found?  Yup, the instructions.

I think I'd skip getting this one, though it looks very cool.  They want you to buy the "remastered" DVD's.  I saw an episode of that the other day, they changed the special effects and it looks awful.  Like highly detailed crayon drawings or something.  In the opening credits they got rid of the realistic, stylish and magnificent U.S.S. Enterprise and put in some utterly crappy looking CGI replacement.  It looks as one-dimensional as a piece of paper.  They even screwed around with the theme music, making the vocals way louder, so now even that sounds like crap.

You must have seen something completely different than what I saw.  I think the remastered opening credits look magnificent; while there have been a couple of episodes in which the CG work has looked cartoony (I'm thinking "The Galileo Seven"), in most of them it's been a tasteful refinement of the primitve and limited original FX.

I saw The Enterprise Incident on TV the other day.  Don't know if that's the "remastered" version or what, I assumed it was since I don't think there would be a whole lot of different re-done versions out there, but who knows.  What I saw was Sci-Fi Channel Original level CGI, looked like crap.
