Art film about love in a rural setting

I saw this film in the late 90s, and it was probably made in the 70s. It was a "life story" about a woman who worked in a small-town post office (or maybe it was a library, I'm not sure any more) and was courted by a local man (who, if I recall correctly, was socially inept or "simple"). If I remember right, the two of them eventually moved in together. The plot was slow and reflected the pace of rural life, but it was a beautiful story about the trials and tribulations of seeking companionship in a rural context.

Although there have likely been many similar films, this sounds a heck of a lot like TIM (1979), starring Mel Gibson as a good-natured simple fellow - higher functioning than, say, Forrest Gump, but still identified by most everyone around him as being, errr, developmentally disabled or some other term for the same condition. He falls in love with Piper Laurie - yes, Carrie's Mom, and Catherine Martell - who is significantly older than him. They do move in together at the end, her adult children don't approve. It is a nice, more-or-less low-key and peaceful movie, without a ton of outright conflict, and I think a happy ending. And it is rural. Ish.
