Psycho Circus

I remember watching a film (maybe even a TV show/short) years ago on Channel 4, where two guys are at a bar talking, then all of a sudden they transform into bugs (like a praying mantis). I think it was some sort of hallucination/dream sequence, like in Altered States with a anti-drug type message conveyed. It must have been late 80's, early 90's. Any help on this one would be much appreciated, as it's been "bugging" me for over 10 years, an just popped back into my head now...

Could it be this movie perhaps?

I haven't seen it in years so I'm not 100% on it.

Was it "Meet The Applegates" ?
That was on late night Channel 4 all the time years ago.

It's about giant bugs working undercover.

If God exists, why did he make me an atheist? Thats His first mistake.

Thanks man, but that's not it either. I do remember that show, but they were cockroaches if I recall. These two dudes at the bar definately looked like praying mantis, I think it then cut to some image involving cigarettes??

They were Mantises, it was their dog that was a cockroach.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas maybe ? There is a scene there when Johnny Depp is high as hell and start seeing weird creatures in the bar.

Andrew

"Jacob's Ladder" also has some weird scenes when Tim Robbins hallucinates.  Haven't seen it in years, but I remember at least one of the scenes happens in a bar or dance club.

I think those were lizards. Lizards are the usual hallucinations when you mix acid and alcohol in a lounge. Mixing alcohol and cigarettes in a bar makes mantises.

......"Now toddle off and fly your flying machine."

Hibbins

Yeah that's right it was lizards my bad. Just thought of that movie when i saw what he wrought.

Psycho Circus

Nope, not meet the applegates. It's not Jacob's Ladder, I have it on DVD. It's well before Fear & Lothing......

Thanks for the suggestions tho' guys.

I think it was definately between 89-93.

I think it was definately between 89-93.

That would be a perfect period for an episode of the "Monsters" TV show.  Do you remember how good the quality of the transformation scene was?

Ahh, that's the thing. It was like a close up of microscopic cells at first, then a cut back to the bar, a puff of smoke and the two guys had become praying mantis.

The series "Monsters' was shown as late night 'Filler' on Channel 5 in the U.K from around 1997-2003. Perhaps it was shown in your 'Grenada' region of ITV sometime closer to it's original recording date. That said, Channel 4 does seem to show a lot of strange shorts and always has.
There are few things more beautiful than a sporting montage with a soft-rock soundtrack
