Linking to images on other sites

Please be warned that sites usually do not like it when you use the image links (so that they display) to link to their images.  Most of the time the site will just display a red circle with a censored bar through it, but we recently encountered one where the site, probably automatically, replaced the linked image with very graphic gay porn.  I have put that site into the censored words filter to prevent it from happening again.

If you are going to post images, it is best to do so from a source that you control - such as photobucket or another file sharing service.

That's effed up that it happened here on the BMO board, but if it had happened anywhere else I'd have to tout the grotesque brilliance of the original site's owner.  :bouncegiggle:

I also recommend PhotoBucket as an image hosting service. I started using them when my image postings all seemed to start coming up blocked and they haven't failed me yet.

I've been using http://imageshack.us, but only because that's the first one that came to mind.

Are there any pros and cons for the various image hosting services? Is it worth somebody putting together a list?

Both Photobucket and Imageshack are very easy to use.
Perhaps Andrew or one of us could create a photo linking tutorial thread and have it made a sticky.

Anybody is welcome to use my image hosting on my site at http://5g8.net/uploader/ (the user name and password are actually on the page itself).

I have not tried the membership with imageshack, so I don't know how well that works.

PhotoBucket is probably about the best available (of which I am aware, being that I use my own service anymore) as you can organize your images and link to about anywhere (I've had imageshack block images linked to some sites, where that has never happened with PhotoBucket, from my experience).

Well AFAIK it's free*.  That's a big plus.

(logging in)

Hmm.  I see there's now an option to create a PDF book.  That's new from the last time I logged in.  ANYway. .

You get to keep track of all the images you upload within your account.  (But you HAVE to be logged in.)

You can upload videos too, I think.  There's also voice mail message hosting or something.  Never used either feature though.

You've two viewing options to keep track of all your uploaded images.  One's a page of simple thumbnails the other (classic view, which I prefer) gives you a page of fewer thumbnails with other onscreen stuff like link codes et al.

There's also a news Blog you get access to and a bunch of add-on/plugin tools.

Let's see what else do I see.  There's some sort of torrent manager thingy here.  NO clue what that's for.  Looks like some sort of subscription thingy.

There's Forums.  Ooh.  It's an external link.  Now I have to navigate back to imageshack. .

* Technically it's a subscription service too.  Here's what a sub gets you over a free account:

  • 3 megabyte per image limit instead of 1.5
    unlimited bandwidth
    ability to upload .swf files
    unlimited uploads
    dedicated download speed
    premium customer support
free upload tools (see "tools" in the imageshack header)
automatic upload backups (make sure to register an account after you subscribe

I have my own image hosting service and webspace, why would I use their's?

Especially being that I don't put restrictions on where images hosted on my site can be linked.

I think those restrictions are mostly put on sites that draw a lot of bandwidth and/or post pics in violation of the TOS.  Not really sure how those restrictions work.  Speaking of restrictions. .

Don't you worry that people might misuse your service for uploading of vile degrading filth like pictures of nubile naked women frolicking in bubble baths splash attacking each other?

O, the humanity!
