I watched a documentary the other night on TCM-Stanley Kubrick: a Life in Pictures.
Very good film. I myself love all of his films that I've seen. But my favorite? I dunno...that's tuff. But...if it comes right down to it-I go for DR.STRANGELOVE.

Like RC says, it's a tough choice, but I went with "Paths of Glory". Mainly because this is one of the very few films that I consider to be a work of art.

Reach for the heavens in hope for the future for all that we can be, not what we are. Henry John Deutschendorf Jr.

Dennis-I have yet to see PATHS OF GLORY but it's on my 'MUST SEE' list!

It's a great film, good to watch , entertaining and thought provoking at the same time.

Monster Jungle X-Ray

This is a very tough decision, but I'll have to go with A Clockwork Orange out of nostalgia. Kubrick had an amazing career, nearly every film he made would have been a crowning masterpiece in another director's filmography. RCMerchant you need to see Paths of Glory, it is a very powerful film, and has one of Kirk Douglas' finest performances.

It is perhaps bittersweet that Kubrick did not live to see the year 2001.

Tough, almost impossible to choose.  I can't think of any director who made as many classic films, especially with such a short filmography.  I think Kubrick was probably the best director who ever lived.

In a tough ballot I choose 2001, because it's so unique, audacious, and iconic.  STRANGELOVE and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE were close seconds.  Movies like SPARTACUS and THE SHINING are classics would be the pinnacle of almost any other director's career, but don't even make my top 3 Kubrick films.  Amazing.

Barry Lyndon was really good.  I like how he joined the army just to like get from one place to another then he quit

Mr. DS

I'm in for a Clockwork Orange which was wonderfully odd.  McDowell's best work in a film IMHO and Kubrick's direction made it all the more disturbing yet lovable.

am i the only person who thinks that 'eyes wide shut' is good? i mean, not the best, but still good. it's creepy, pacey, sexy and glows with the luminescence of fine craftsmanship.

i voted for dr strangelove.

Allhallowsday

I chose BARRY LYNDON as it is one of my favorite films;  SPARTACUS also.  2001 gets better each time I look at it (considering I was bored when I first looked at it 30+ years ago...)  PATHS OF GLORY is pretty damned fine.  LOLITA should be dated yet holds up remarkably well, and DR. STRANGELOVE gets funnier each time I watch it.

It was a tough choice for me between The Shining and Dr. Strangelove, but I have to say the one I've watched more times with more people and gotten more overall enjoyment out of has to be The Shining.

That has to be the most effective scene on film revealing that a character is completely bats**t insane. And the whole movie is so atmospheric. A favourite of mine since the first time I saw it.

And on the subject of Kubrick in general, this video cracks me up.

Have to go with 2001: A Space Odyssey as it's one of the first films to truly make me appreciate and fall in love with Science Fiction storytelling...that said, I very much like nearly all of Kubrick's films and think very highly of PATHS OF GLORY, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, DR. STRANGELOVE, SPARTACUS, THE KILLING and THE SHINING in particular.
