I'm a nerd Star Wars fan and I always wonder, if Darth Vader didnt grab the Emperor at the end of the movie would he still be alive? I mean yes Luke did kick his ass but I think it was the Emperor's lighting energy that killed him.

Yes, he would have survived, that's why the Emperor told Luke to kill him once he was beaten.  Luke didn't really kick his ass too badly except chopping off an arm that had already been chopped off. I think he was just exhausted and outmatched. I always thought the lightning messed up his life-support system and that's why he died. To me, it was obvious that his gear was a life-support system, which is why Luke exclaimed that he would die if he took it off.

^ I was always under the impression his hand getting sliced off caused an oxygen leak in Vader's sealed suit hence his gasping for air in the end.  But you could be right Ghouck about the lighting short circuiting Vader's life support system. 
If I ever meet Luke I'll ask him.
