Equinox (1970)

I just watched this film. Absolutely amazing bad film!  I looked it up online and apparently the four main characters are supposed to be teenagers.  That's hilarious.  One of the guys must be in his 30's, and I doubt a single one of them was under 25 at the time.  It was also suggested that this film inspired Evil Dead.  I don't know if that's true, but when I was watching it Evil Dead kept coming to mind.  I looked up the director and this was his only director credit, but he was definately big in the special effects capacity later.  Definately a must for bad movie watchers everywhere.

Yep I remember this one!  It was also covered in Famous Monsters magazine when I was a little guy.  Some definite inspirations for The Evil Dead, and some say The Blair Witch Project.  This one was all over TV when I was a lad.

I wouldn't have pegged the actors for high school students, but college students would be a bit more believable.  I knew they were in trouble the minute the sheriff on horseback introduced himself as "sheriff Asmodeus".  Nice giveawy

I know Mike Vraney from Something weird lists it as his favorite movie but  boy I don't get it.  the claymatin or whatever is like 20 years behind the times and that's the most notable thing about it

Bonus "bad" points:  All of the sound was very clearly recorded in post.  All of the dialogue, everything.  And badly.  Sometimes it's so bad it looks like kung fu movie overdubbing.  I read that the director made the movie for $6500.  Even with the cheesy special effects and it being in 1970, how is that possible?  The actors had to have worked for free.

wow... the movie was a STUDENT PROJECT.

It started in the mid 1960's and Dennis Muren did most of the work after hours (or when he had time and money) and it took him 4 or 5 years to complete.

It worked very well as a career starter...

Dennis Muren has worked on such projects as STAR WARS, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Young Sherlock Holmes, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, ETC. ETC. ETC... Actually if you look at most George Lucas and Steven Spielberg movies you will see Dennis Muren name.

Ever notice that he looks like Robert Picardo with a bad toupee in the movie? At least he does to me.

At first I didn't know what to expect. Especially the Criterion Collection title screen threw me off.
I especially loved seeing the stop-motion humans. Though, all in all it was a ambitious project.
