AHD: Derf already guessed Sgt. Pepper
DCA: +1 for "Trout Mask Replica"
Burgo: -1 for "American Pie"
Jack: +1 for "Live at the Regal" (excellent pick, by the way)

Or dig yourself in a bigger hole.  No "In a Gadda da Vida" or "A Black and White Night."  -2.   Bluesad

Sorry Andrew, not the Peter Gabriel he picked, although it is listed as a "Catalog Choice" for PG.  -1.

Huh.  If not that one, I'd assume he must have picked "Passion" instead.  I get the understanding that this list is important albums, vice popular, but "So" seemed like a good rounded choice.

Just to make sure:  there are not greatest hits compilations are there?  All of these are original albums?

Andrew: no, not "Passion" either. Another -1.  Smile

The albums selected tend to be the ones that were critically acclaimed rather than the ones that sold lots of copies (although in lots of cases they're the same thing).

The recordings are mostly original albums; very, very rarely singles; and sometimes greatest hits compilations.  A few times there are even box sets, which I think is cheating a bit.  Compilations turn up especially when dealing with older artists who worked in the era when singles were the big thing, not albums.

Also I'll point out that most of the guesses here have been for rock, but even though rock is the largest category there are probably only about 300-400 rock albums on the list.  If it were a list of 1000 rock albums, a lot of your choices may have made it.

As far as I can tell, this 1,000 recordings list is a load of hogwash.  Impossible for some of the songs and albums listed here not to be on it.  I'm still baffled by Led Zep IV not being on the list.  But I'll have some more guesses forthcoming anyway . . .
