Remakes/Reboots Hollywood vs. B Movies

Hollywood is spending lots of money on reboots and remakes of movies that were already good in the first place, but personally I think that they should remake the best of the B movies and maybe even a few of the lesser B movies. Usually I'm against remakes and reboots cause in my view 9/10 of those films end up worse than the original, but I think with a bigger budget many of the awesome B movies could actually be better than the remakes of a remake or the reboot o a remade movie. I was just curious as to if I was alone on this feeling or not and if you agree what B movie would you want to see remade and why?

Frightening.

I was just about to post a thread like this.

Here's the requirement I would add to this thread: It has to be something that would be a decent remake/reboot of something that may have been decent to begin with, or something that had potential but lost it in translation.

Some recent films I thought would make GREAT remakes are:

Dead Of Night/Deathdream: It fits because of the anti-war theme that would blend easily with the Iraqi conflict, and if shifted to some parents who are older African-Americans, it would be good, as long as they kept it fairly mental and less of a CGI-gorefest.

Blue Sunshine: I'm actually watching it now, and I keep thinking about all the designer drugs that were created in the 80's with little thought as to the long-range effects on the users. The "War Of The Worlds" TV series had an episode about designer drugs and how the molecule structures brought about a DNA re-construct to enable the aliens to inhabit the bodies more easily. This could be an awesome film with lots of action, grue and a nice social sub-text while tapping into the 80s.

Kiss Daddy Goodbye: A low-down and cheese-ball flick, but with a little more character development and better child actors, it could be an entertaining low-grade horror film, especially after "Firestarter" and "Carrie" and the like.

I admit things like "Dead Of Night" are classic low-budget films, but in the right hands, they would not be rapes of our cultural memories, unlike the new "The Karate Kid".

that is a good addition you made and i agree on the karate kid its not even karate its kung fu why not call it the kung fu kid at least then it would make a lil more sense to me

There was already a Plan 9 remake (which, for some reason, nobody's seen) and there's apparently another one in the works.  IMDb can be really vague sometimes.

Welcome to the club.

Soon, you will SEE the essence of Manos.
After a few more viewings, you will finally understand. Manos is more than just a movie.
It's an experience! It's a rite of passage!

Now excuse me, I have to take my medications before the white coated gentlemen come back.

I always hoped they would not have a big budget remake of Vanishing Point. I've seen the tv remake from a little while back and it was allright. Since Chrysler is building the Dodge Challenger again, I just groan to myself. How will they mess it up? Who will be the big name stars they put in it? Will it be real stunts or just cgi? Guess I'll just wonder.

I wonder if Mad Max is on the remake list yet?

I'm sure Hollywood would treat B movies with no respect whatsoever - just make a Will Farrel madcap comedy with some character names coinciding with the original movie.

funny... They seem to be making Mad Max 4: Fury Road... although it looks like they started the project around 2003 but had to freeze production because of Gulf War 2 and it looks like they are pushing things into motion in 2009 hoping to get the movie off the ground and it looks like it might be released in 2011... :)

thanks for the info on Mad Max 4. I'll have to check that out

One movie I'd like to see remade someday is Pete Walker's "Frightmare".  But whoever has to fill in Sheila Keith's shoes (the cannibalistic old lady) has a daunting task ahead of them.

I picture CYNDI LAUPER (56 years old) playing the cannibalistic old lady... and she will not be too out of place with a younger daughter.

Good choice on a remake :)

As long as CHOPPING MALL, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, GARBAGE PAIL KIDS MOVIE, MOSQUITO are left alone...I'll be happy.
