I wouldn't feel right killing Roach because I enjoyed all the movies he directed above. Granted some of them might have been guilty pleasure likes but regardless, I did enjoy them which is more than I can say for any of Smith's post Clerks work..

Smith's best post-Clerks flicks are brilliant: Chasing Amy was a great, underrated little movie, Dogma was a well done flick, Clerks 2 was surprising as a sequel that's just as good as the original.  Sure, Jersey Girl may not have been great, but every director stumbles now and then, even the best ones.  Sure, he may rely on more 'crude' humor, but that's where his fanbase lies so I don't blame him there.  None of Roach's films I liked.

Clerks is the only film of Smith's I've actually liked (suspect I might like Mallrats too but I haven't seen that one yet)...I tried the others you mentioned and was sorely disappointed by most of them and honestly I thought Clerks II was utter garbage.

Mallrats you may like.  Funny movie.  First 'big' movie for Jason Lee.  Brilliantly done.  I think the guy's done sweet work.

NOMINATION: Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Funny People, 40 Year Old Virgin) Sadly, since it's limited to DIRECTED films, it leaves off numerous other great films he's done as writer and producer.

On a note: I like Heckerling, but voting against Kubrick is a lost cause.  I personally don't like any of his flicks beyond A Clockwork Orange, and even that was just okay in my book.  I voted for Smith cause I personally like ALL of his flicks.  Oz is good but isn't great and Apatow has done more as a producer as opposed to directing.
