Ozzymandias speaks: ARTHUR GODFREY! I know he was a pioneer in radio and TV, being a sort of Don Imus/Simon Cowell forerunner, but the only reason he was in most movies was because he was Arthur Godfrey. He crops in several B-movies for no apparent reason other than they wanted a famous person in the movie or as somebody's uncle.

The guy had no real talent except convincing America that he was a nice, easygoing country boy. His career hit the skids when people found out he was an egomaniacs jerk who fired people who got more attention than him.

Just saw Godfery last night in ANGEL'S REVENGE, playing himself. They announced his presence in the audience at a Vegas gig as if he were a big star. Other notbale has-beens in the cast were past-their-peaks Alan Hale, Jim Backus, Pat Buttram, Peter Lawford and Jack Palance. They all get higher billing than the 7 females that are the actual stars!

That's the first movie I thought of when I read about Mr. Godfrey. The MST3K version is gold. I love when Mr. Godfrey blows a kiss at the gal singing an inane disco song and Crow says, "burrrrrrrp!"

Supposedly Godfrey's "ah, shucks/egotistical bastard" persona was a major inspiration for Andy Griffith's Lonesome Rhoads in Elia Kazan's A FACE IN THE CROWD.

If you think Griffith is just good ol' Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry and Opie's daddy, give this one a look.

Ozzymandias speaks: I read that on IMDB too. Doesn't surprise me. Yes, FACE IN THE CROWD is one of the great films of the 50's. It holds up because of great writing and it's zings at the media. Sort of prophetic view of media with the talk radio pundit's power and also "male enhancment" pharmacuticles.
