Everyone keeps saying that. I can't see any difference.

Was just reminded of another peeve today. When you order something online and they notify you that your order has been shipped and give you a tracking number, when in reality all they've done is sent the information to the courier and gotten a tracking number. The order, meanwhile, might not even be filled, much less shipped.

Further to that, I hate placing an order to a company claiming to be Canadian, dealing in Canadian funds and operating a .ca website, then finding out my package is being shipped from New Jersey. Patriotism aside, I prefer a Canadian company because of the short delivery time. I order from a Canadian company so I can get my package in a couple of days. It took this company a couple of days to ship the order, in spite of sending me a tracking number right away, and now it's coming twice the distance I expected, with a border in the middle that is undoubtedly going to cause the sort of delay I was specifically trying to avoid. Bloody liars.

Vegans- they're telling lies! they eat plant based products, but they say that it has no flesh. But they do, and have feelings, and are biotic. It's just a free-for all, that's what the Earth is.
yeah no.

Throw in the fact that most crops are genetically modified, and that some of that modification involves putting animal genes into plants, and well...

Which vegans say plant products have no flesh?  That's debatable I suppose, but the tissue that makes up fruit is sometimes called flesh.  I also question the research that suggest plants have feelings, in much the same way earlier people were questioning whether insects/arthropods feel pain.  Detecting an injury and having an automatic response to it isn't the same thing as pain.

Either way, the general justifications behind morality-based vegetarians and vegans is to minimize suffering caused by their food purchases.  Since meat requires the destruction of huge amounts of plants to create, more so than would be caused by simply eating the plants themselves, a vegan diet still induces less suffering than a meat diet.

On a final note, I eat quite a bit of meat.    :tongueout:

Mr. DS

I personally don't care what people eat as long as it isn't forced down my throat and there is no hypocrisy involved.

I think that comes down to the interpretation of "feelings." Plants are known to react to stimuli, but that can mean nothing more than straight physical stimulation, not "feelings" in the touchy-feely sense.

Whatever. I eat meat and love it.

That really depends on how you go about growing, harvesting and processing your crops. Agriculture displaces native flora and fauna no matter how carefully you plan it and tends to introduce monocultures that not only reduce biodiversity, but are susceptible to being completely wiped out by a single disease because all the plants are pretty much the same right down to their genetics (we almost lost bananas because of this). Many chemicals are typically used on crops to promote rapid plant growth, as well as to kill weeds and pests. These chemicals can and do get into the soil and nearby water sources, potentially contaminating them to the point that it harms local wildlife (much more common with contaminated water sources; this is why you can't eat the fish from some bodies of water).

Are people trying to reverse these trends? Absolutely. It's slow-going, though, and some of the alternatives proposed just won't meet the demands of our constantly-growing, increasingly urbanized population. This is a very serious issue that tends to get overlooked simply because many people just aren't familiar with agriculture even though it is the foundation of our civilization.
