ok so i remember this movie my grandma bought me for christmas when i was about 8 it was 80s or 90s was about this kid who is sucked into a game sort of like asteroids where he has to help win a war in order to get home. it looks like a bad flight simulator and the "aliens" look like rubber puppets. any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I don't really remember what the aliens looked like, but it starts with an arcade game (like Asteroids) that recruits fighters and the main character has to help win a war.

eta: Apparently it was one of the first to use cgi and there was a video game based upon it afterward.
