Looks like I'm going to be a judge for the upcoming Louisville International Film Festival.  I'll be judging films in the "On the Edge" category, which "showcases progressive, non-traditional films, including horror, science fiction, animated films, and off-beat narratives."  I'll also be on the panel judging either live action or animated shorts (haven't decided which yet, it will depend on which panel needs more judges).

I haven't had any orientation yet, but it's clear the duties will involve watching the submitted films and deciding which ones will be invited to the festival.  I'm not sure yet if I'll be voting on the winners or not.

It's a volunteer position, so I wasn't selected for my expertise.  But it seems like it should be lots of fun.  I'm also hoping to make some more connections with directors, distributors and other people in the film industry.

If anyone's in the Louisville area and also wants to serve as judge, I get the feeling there are still positions open.  Contact me and I'll try to hook you up.

I'll be sure to report on the movies I see!

I don't think any of the little old ladies on the board wanted it.

Do they provide the popcorn and coke or do they expect you to bring your own?

They do realize that you're not supposed to watch movies like that without refreshments, right?

Oh how exciting!!  I hope for your sake the movies are enjoyable!

They don't even provide the screening room, just the DVDs.  I'm sure I'll get some perks, though.

By the way this wasn't hard at all.  If you're interested in doing something similar you can probably just contact your local film festival and ask if they take volunteers.

How much time needs to be invested besides the time it takes to watch the films and make decisions and whatnot?  I'm kind of interested.

I believe it's just a matter of screening the films, but I don't know how much time is involved (I don't know how many movies there are to watch).  I can send the organizer an email asking if you'd like me to, or ask if she'll email you directly.
