Wow. Not too many people are hip to Withnail and I. I saw it in 1987 at a theatre in L.A. I saw it because the movie poster looked interesting. I liked it so much I went back and saw it again.
I don't always talk about bad movies, but when I do, I prefer badmovies.org

I'd say most people over 30 in England have seen it at least once, pretty much. bigger than the 'cult' status I'm guessing it has in the states and elsewhere.

if you mean the game where you have to match them drink for drink as the film goes on,then no. I've heard it is very difficult lol

I've read about it. I understand that Rum is typically substituted for the lighter fluid. I think keeping up with Withnail throughout the runtime of that film would be fatal to most people.

Withnail and I is considered an important piece of English film history from what I understand, while here in the States it is considerably more obscure. I saw it when I was 19 years old, living in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and had just discovered all the indy film venues that were just a 30-minute drive away. Come to think of it, I think I saw Withnail and I three times in the theatre, twice on two different dates. I think I was trying to impress them with how worldly I was by taking them to see a foreign film.   :teddyr:

Hammock Rider

I saw Whitnail & I on tape a few years after it was released so I guess I don't think of it as an 80's film. But it was brilliant. I don't know why Richard Grant hasn't become a bigger star.

Looking at this list it's pretty obvious that the 80's was a good decade for comedies. I'd even go so far to say that as far as comedies are concerned, it was the Best Decade.

This is a tough one.

Not in any particular order.

1) Uncle Buck (1989)
2) Back To School (1986)
3) Stripes (1981)
4) Sixteen Candles (1984)
5) Pee wee' Big Adventure (1985)

There are so many to choose from:

Fletch
The Man with Two Brains
Revenge Of The Nerds
Scrooged

I could go on and on.

Sixteen Candles and Revenge Of The Nerds. You definitely couldn't have had the 80's w\o these two!

Malatu na bala
Truth is power.

Heca, Pellani! Agabaiyane Ehlnadaya!

Aure-El is our father, and I, Umaril, the king!

Some substitute the lighter fuel with vinegar as the director did in the film, without telling Richard E Grant, who thought it was going to be water.
