I remember a cartoon on cartoon network from the 90s I can't find anywhere but I think they took it off the air for being too scary. It started in a normal city where a little boy was bored, I don't remember why he left but he went through the woods on a journey in a car. He and his travelling companion had a harder and harder time getting through the mud before it finally got stuck. Then it turns out there are actually men that form out of mud to kill them. I think there were melting clocks like the Dali picture too. Someone help me figure out what the cartoon was!

It's an excellent cartoon, but also make sure to read the book (which is even better).  Imagine "Alice in Wonderland" with a male protagonist.
